Every family's feeding journey is unique, and for many, mechanical milk removal or "pumping" becomes necessary for a certain duration. To ensure this process is as efficient, effective, and enjoyable as possible, it is important to ensure that the pump not only works properly but also fits well. This service is accessible to all patients referred to our program for lactation and feeding assistance.

During a personalized pump fitting, you will work directly with a lactation and infant feeding physician to:

  • Assess flange size: Different types, styles, and sizes of flanges and/or inserts are available to try out in the office. It is important to pump with them for a significant duration in the office to ensure we find the right fit. As needed, loaner items are provided to families to borrow until they can order the pump items.

  • Trial different pumps: Not all pumps are created equal, and individuals may respond differently to various pumps.

  • Assess proper extraction settings.

  • Suction assessment of your pump: Sometimes, especially if a pump has been used for a long time, the vacuum may no longer be sufficient to support your pumping needs.

  • Review and optimization of your lactation and infant feeding goals and how they relate to your pumping journey.

  • Discussion of medications to help optimize lactation and pumping.

  • Review of your pumping rhythm to achieve optimal output, comfort, and sustainability.

  • Advice regarding what pump to purchase based on your needs, as well as breast/chest anatomy and tissue type.

  • Assistance with your infant taking or using a bottle if needed.

  • Attending to any pump-related tissue trauma or injuries with in-office treatment and/or medication management.

  • Discussion of prevention of hyperlactation or obstructions.

And much more!

Our clinic offers a loaner program for pumps and pumping supplies for patients in need. Unfortunately, we do not have enough supplies to support families who have not been referred to our clinic. If you have a pump or pump supplies, in good quality, that you would liek to donate to a family in need, please contact our office via email to arrnage drop off. Please note, due to the fact pump fittings are not a covered procedure by the Alberta Schedule of Medical Benefits , there is a nominal charge to cover the cost of supplies and sterilzing with each pump fitting. This fee is waived for patients unable to cover the cost of this service. Our team looks forward to optimizing your pumping journey.
